Preventative Care for Periodontal Disease

Handouts

Prevent gingivitis and dental disease by controlling the development of plaque and tartar.

Develop a plan for dental health with your veterinarian!

Examine your dog’s teeth regularly at home.

An annual oral exam by your veterinarian is recommended.

Look for gingivitis, red inflamed gums. Treatment can prevent further damage.

Tartar on teeth will require a dental cleaning by your veterinarian.

Include daily at-home treatment: the most effective prevention is daily brushing with dog toothpaste. Dental wipes, diets, treats, chews, and water additives are also options.

Choose a product tested and shown to be effective by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (www.VOHC.org).

Avoid anesthesia-free dentistry or ‘handscaling’. This does not clean under the gums, will leave a rough surface that increases plaque and tartar buildup, and is painful for the dog.
